Other shark species spotted during the Sardine Run

OTHER TYPES OF SHARKS YOU CAN SPOT DURING THE SARDINE RUN:

Ragged Tooth Shark: During the Sardine Run season, its common to spot “Raggies” along the way. They are not attracted to the bait balls and are known to migrate along this path. In the winter months, Ragged Tooth Sharks embark on a journey from the Eastern Cape, heading north to the warmer waters of KwaZulu-Natal for the purpose of mating. Pregnant Raggies spend most of their gestation period in the warmer waters of Northern KZN and eventually move to the cooler waters of the Eastern Cape for pupping.

Tiger Shark: Tiger sharks are often encountered in both coastal and offshore waters in South Africa. These sharks are known for their distinctive appearance, featuring dark vertical stripes along their bodies, which somewhat resemble a tiger’s stripes. They are known to feed on a variety of prey, including fish, sea turtles and other marine mammals.

Bull Shark: Bull sharks are commonly found along the eastern and southern coasts, including areas like KwaZulu-Natal. They are considered potentially dangerous due to their proximity to populated areas and their habit of entering estuaries and rivers. Bull sharks are often found in the rivers in the Transkei.
