Migration of Humpback Whales during the Sardine Run

The migration of Humpback whales in South Africa is a fascinating phenomenon. These majestic marine mammals undertake long journeys between their feeding and breeding grounds, and South Africa plays a significant role in this migration route.

The migration is closely associated with the Sardine Run. Humpback whales are known for their seasonal migration, which typically occurs from May to December. They travel from their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean to the eastern coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, this area is an ideal breeding and calving ground for humpback whales. The warm waters provide a suitable environment for the females to care for their calves.

They are quite the entertainers, putting on amazing shows by breaching and slapping the water with their tails. The presence of these majestic marine mammals along the South African coast not only contributes to the country’s rich biodiversity but also provides valuable opportunities for research, education, and sustainable tourism.
